Euros 2022 Liveblog: Ladies Free skate

Current competitor sounds like she has a Denzel Washington voiceover and I agree on that basis alone. Brezinova. She looks preoccupied and not totally into this footwork. Bold choice to go for a jump at the end of the program. She did not look happy at the end of that and yea fair she's down in 9th at the moment. During the break I showed my husband the Fusar-Poli/Margaglio original dance from the 2006 Olympics when she GLARED at him. In my memory she glared at him for like a full 3 minutes. Turns out it was shorter but the British Eurosport guys were like YIKES as were we ALL.

I somewhat recommend a look through of Gofugyourself's costume reviews from US Nationals. I say somewhat because they are 4-year fans and have said some nasty things about Ashley Wagner and really don't seem to understand why US Figure Skating chooses a team based on a body of work instead of say, relying on a single competition to determine who goes. It is one thing that has always bugged me. 
ANYWAY.

Mikutina -AUT
Lovely skater, but yea she's really struggling. Tripped on her toe pick, nice that the audience is really trying to buoy her up. Nice skating quality though. I think it's taking a while as they review the jumps-they didn't look fully rotated.

Schott- GER
Love the movement of her skirt. 3F-2T is really nice. Steps out of 3F. Falls on the 3L. 2A really nice and spin is well placed with the music. 2A again really nice. Turns into 3S well done. 3S-2T is good. Crowd clapping along but she's not giving much of a performance. Yea nice technical performance, but a little cold in terms of performance. 

Getting groceries, gotta take off! Hopefully I come back before the big guns finish!

Kurakova-POL
Ok I'm back in time to see Kurakova is very pleased with her program-good for her! I think this an instrumental arrangement of Beauty and the Beast-and if so I approve. Big score, highest PCS yet and highest TES as well.

Shcherbakova-RUS
Ok just in time! Shot of Eteri before she starts. Little inside edge landing on the first 4-flip but can't fault it, its a frickin quad. Positive GOE idk about that but anyway. 3L-3T is good. Really nice 2A. Bit slow into the 2A but lands it nicely. Really nice spin-such speed throughout. 3L-3T is good. 3T-L-3S nice and then 3Lu on the music. Musical interpretation is eh. 89 points in the TES so ok, new leader. Every time Russian fans chant it has the cadence of "4 more years" which actually kind of fits but also is definitely not what they're saying. 168, higher I think than some competitor's combined score so good for her. 

Trusova- RUS
Would she be a redhead if she weren't skating to Cruella? 4 flip I MEAN. So casual. 4 salchow? Yep. and also very casual. 2A-3T is lovely. Dead eyed blank stare. Falls on a 4 toe. Did we need that? Surely 2 quads is plenty? Is dead eyed blank stare on brand for Cruella? I don't think so-she was out and out crazy. She had red eyes! Nasty looking fall on quad lutz. Please be kind to your knees. 3lutz is tough gets the combo in there, 3 salchow. 3 lu-3toe is fine. Absolutely nothing happening in her eyes right now, she is just laser focused on jumping. Bore me to death. No offense Sasha. 159 wow embarassing (jk obviously). Into 2nd. 

Hendrickx-BEL
First triple in her combo is nice but sits the second one down. She doesn't have any quads..that I know of so she needed to hit all her jumps in order to be in the mix. We shall see. She's definitely giving us a pulse so that's nice. Will help her to have higher PCS even though the judges are handing out grossly high PCS for her Russian competitors-dont @ me! Her outfit is SO pretty. 3L-2T is nice. Sits the next jump-it's not looking good for her. 3-2-2 gets it to her feet. She looks really upset-understandably. Will  be out of the medals-bummer. 131 for the FS, into 3rd. Did not win PCS battle-that went to Shcherbakova. Uhm. I guess.

Valieva- RUS
Oh, skating to Bolero? WHY? Well I guess it's going to be 4 minutes of ice jumping? So what does the music choice matter. 4S is lovely. fall on triple axel and ppl are gasping in the stands. 4toe-3toe is nice. 3loop is good. Well she is making eye contact with the judges. I guess that's something. Almost fell out of the spiral sequence yikes. Don't know how she landed the next 2 jumps, so far forward, 4toe-3sal. More jumps happened idk. They were good. She actually has a pulse! She's actually serving attitude during this footwork! PRAISE! Eteri loves an illusion spin. Well done, for sure winner. Back to the song choice, this will forever remind me of when Carolina Kostner skated it and Dick Button kept going on about how sexual the music was. I have never liked his commentary and you may quote me on that. 168 for her FS and that's the title for her. Kudos kid.

Allow me to preface this post by saying, while this post might be titled the "Best of the best performances" there's really no way to judge objectively what the best performances are. We could go by the ones with the highest scores, but then it'd be hard to compare against the old 6.0 system, not to mention all the behind-the-scenes politics that goes on in skating. Figure Skating: The basics (Part 2, spins)

So we've covered the jumps-let's move on to spins. This one will be a little harder since, while yes there are general groups/kinds of spins, skaters are encouraged to innovate with positions of free legs, arms, and combinations. In fact under the current point system, it would be incredibly rare to see a layback spin on its own without any kind of change of position or variation. Which is honestly kind of a shame! A layback spin, done perfectly used to be one of the hallmark moves in figure skating-the one they put on magazine covers and what-not. Why do skaters change position so much? The points darling, the points! By changing position, Gumby-ing yourself around etc. a skater can increase the level of difficulty and thereby the base value awarded. In jumps we didn't have to talk about this, because jumps essentially tell you their difficulty level, i.e. a single axel would be (sort of) a level 1 and get a corresponding base value.  Ok, we've done jumps, spins and you know-ice dance. Let's look at the freaks who do pairs skating (this is a compliment by the way, these people are to be feared and respected at all times, they could literally die at any time doing these tricks). Also as an aside, I'm going to try and be more gender neutral in my terminology going forward-thanks all! Ok let's get into the required elements for pairs skating! Side by side jumps and Side by side spins The side by side elements, are as you would imagine-just 2 skaters doing the same element individually (but synchronized, to make it harder). That's about as complicated as it gets and levels for jumps are pretty self explanatory. Spins are a little more creative in pairs skating than they used to be...to the detriment in my opinion.
